For more than 20 years, Hillary Richard has been handling major
commercial and securities disputes in federal and state courts
across the country and in arbitrations. She has been recognized as
one of Manhattan’s top lawyers in business litigation and securities
litigation by Superlawyers.
Ms. Richard is known as a fierce litigator and forceful advocate
who does what it takes to achieve the best outcome for her
clients. She also regularly advises clients on business and
strategic decisions in an effort to resolve disputes short of
litigation.
Ms. Richard is particularly skilled at representing financial
institutions in complex financing matters. Her clients include
hedge funds, private equity funds, commercial banks, investment
firms and broker-dealers. Ms. Richard’s cases have included
securities fraud, breach of contract, breach of fiduciary duty,
trade secret, and successor liability claims. Ms. Richard’s recent
successes include winning the dismissal of a multimillion-dollar
breach of contract action against a collateral manager on a summary
judgment motion; obtaining the dismissal of a $200 million
securities fraud case against a hedge fund; securing a $1.3 million
judgment against a defaulting issuer on behalf of an investment
fund; successfully defending an investment bank in a $55 million
fraud claim; and successfully defending a hedge fund in a
multi-million dollar breach of contract action.
Ms. Richard has also successfully represented individuals and
institutions in regulatory and administrative proceedings. In
addition, through her representation of clients in RICO actions, Ms.
Richard has developed an expertise in the civil and criminal RICO
and forfeiture statutes.
Prior to founding Brune & Richard in 1998, Ms. Richard was a
partner at Rabinowitz, Boudin, Standard, Krinsky & Lieberman,
P.C. In 1998, Ms. Richard received the 1998 Women of Power and
Influence Award from the National Organization for Women, New York
City. In 2001, she was profiled in New York Magazine as
one of New York City’s top young lawyers. From 2004-2007, Ms.
Richard served as the Associate Justice for the Village of Saltaire.
Ms. Richard regularly teaches trial techniques at the Benjamin N.
Cardozo School of Law’s Intensive Trial Advocacy Program and has
lectured at the Practicing Law Institute. In addition, she has
lectured widely on issues pertaining to civil and criminal law and
has provided legal commentary on television on a variety of legal
issues.
Ms. Richard graduated from Harvard Law School in 1988 with
honors. She received the C. Clyde Ferguson Fellowship in Human
Rights in 1986. She graduated from Fordham University, College at
Lincoln Center, summa cum laude in 1985.
